There is of course, always home..

•March 29, 2017 • 2 Comments

as is the way with the world these days
we are constantly being reminded
reminded of our digitally rich recent pasts
as today, again, prompted, proved
this time
three years ago, was he

he is
back, ‘on the run’
back there, in the region of 2 ½ years now
this image
courteously generated by Google as a reminder
shows a lloyd some 4 ½ stone enhanced from today’s
weigh in
and ‘there’, his familiar
finds one
in pub
his host
period
setting
and match

9th april 2014

this 9th april
he returns ‘home’
sometimes he mentions home as being
somewhere in south wales… (his place of birth)
and then sometimes
sheffield
the city of his boyhood, youth and young manli’s
the city where he first learned also, to run

and it is for this reason he returns, ‘home’
to run
to run simply, the most important race he has run
since this return
back in 2014
post april 9th
post this image
where on that day, he imagined
running, simply as part, as parcel of, a delusional dream
along with all those ‘others’

only then, to be confounded
three years hence
the close proximities
of digital reminders
persistently perpetuating

and whilst
all the time…

this april 9th
he will set out in the ‘yorkshire’
or as he would have it
‘sheffield’ half marathon
running those very same roads
those young legs once joyed across
with regularity
from centre of town
up, ecclesall road
up, out towards ringinglow
up, out toward moor
before returning
down
back
dore
ecclesall road south
south to town, city
and to finish

but this day
not today
or yesterday’s
but this 9th april 2017
which in time
may realise
with reminders all of its own
wistful acts
of his place
three years passed
another him
another being
or maybe not so changed after all
maybe just the same old
as of that day
delusional
disillusions
dreams
echos

a boy just lost

lost in his heart
and rythem
of distant chimes
pianos running
running pianos
the romance of it all
drinks another drink
yet this time
a mile runs
another mile
and another
and
another

his heart
still pounding
with the effort of it all
but mainly
mainly because
its ‘home’
it always is home
the sheffield half
in sheffield
where the glass
the drinking glass
is alway
half full

Abingdon Marathon 2016 #marathon #Sussexsportphotography 12:26:05 PM

was it the
bellowed
black
bags and
foil capes
whirled

or was it
the long, windy roads
leading
to a marathon

or
could it have been
in getting there
the feeling
always felt
days running
distant from
memory

or that both
brother
father
competed
completed
and in that way
their way
my way
my letting let
theirs down

or did i imagine
in whiling
hours
bar keeping
reconciling
dispositions
you know
the impositions
never able
to really
join in

abingdon marathon
emerged
a day
in arriving
en route
acquiesced
sunday’s
forgiveness

and by introduction
the week leading
a ‘taper’
beyond comprehension
‘easy’
that is not to say
marathon training
per se had preceded

and at work
the autumn snuffles
coughed and wheezed
sure enough
by friday
my best
gave way

the schedule set
saturday met
a short
1.8 miles
cogs
to loosen

this marathon
despite
would be on

i was pleased
both
start
and end
completed
on track

there would be
of course
moments
of beauty
by thames
my river
from london
a familiar friend

and those morning mists
which rise
with breakages
of sunlight raising
all that ran
comfortable
a steady pace ensued

so six miles in
a knee right
had been left
for the past
six months
but no the right
wanted the right
and slowly
began to ingrain
some pain

Abingdon Marathon 2016 #marathon #Sussexsportphotography 11:13:35 AM

to
halfway
in
95 minutes
an echo

the gradient of difficutly
rose
mile markers
slowed
at 20
this
untold
was it

i don’t know
didn’t
beyond here

all reasons
all repertoires
for
and against
consumed
this brutally
brutal
beauty

an ebb
a flow
thames passing
runner’s running
coming going
where once they
came and went

some stopped
to start again
to stop again
to start

near ending

and now
if i could just
forget
forget
a knee
from being dragged
dragging sinew
rather than
run
running

past near
st helen & st katharine
once upon
mother’s school

and find
found
finally
tilbury track
400 meters
or was that
440 yards
to go

now
120

lifts
ascending
upwards
beyond

just for
a moment

bevan boys
bevan girls

running pianos

running and the piano
my closest companions
they feed off
one
another

both in their way
activities of patient endurance
developmental
emergent
journeys
unknown

solitary
personal
quiet

hours spent
over terrain
over keys
listening

marathon thoughts
myths dispelled
loves created
air breathed
hearts asunder

since childhood
these have been
and are
my passions

forever departing

A marathon wait

•September 23, 2016 • Leave a Comment

nearly over

in less than
four weeks
a
first
marathon

with this remarked
first
5k
10k
half marathon
5000m track
(should have been
10,000 track also
but days got wrong there)

have also had their
first moments in the sun-shine
or rain
whichever
english
welsh
shade of
present
became
in the past 20 months or so

abingdon’s spectre looms

but it looms without
fear

even ‘training’ wouldn’t really reflect
i am
because at the same time
i am
not

its a race of celebration
rather
the celebration to run

much more important
to me
would be the cross country season
which embarks just prior
the week indeed before

cross country and
autumn leagues
of past
now present

school fields
of dew
now due

as
the one missed
last year
for all those
right
reasons
but

still missed

in abingdon
a celebration
therefore

a passage of time
reinstated
reinvigorated
relearnt
steps and lines
accumulated
within
and beyond

an
expression
achieved
through the
simple
action
of form

in running
here

in run
there

breath to stride

in spirit

Swansea Bay 10k

•September 20, 2016 • 2 Comments

wept
blubber
in a year where
it feels
so much has been
carried
tears
fell

2637d-01

1k away
a brother
awaiting
he’d therefore be
at 9k
in return

the swansea bay 10k
about to get
underway
and here
one in tearful
emotion
full loco

the brother
dylan
in his day
an exceptional
athlete/runner

now here
for first time witness
his own brother’s
return

as the huddle
huddled
the start
commotion
braced
the countdown
bang
and we’re off

wipe away those tears

and run

run

past 1k
and that other bevan
bellowed
to awaken
fogged horns
‘comm’on lloyd
look’n good’

through 2k
3k
4k
then the five
of halfway

don’t look
down
don’t
an inner voice
of instruction
to watch time

then

gone past
5k
down he looks
19:57
oh…!

but in strength
of feeling strong
the time implied
too quick
a gentle readjustment
reeled in
sliced
and diced
pace

6k
7k
8k
and then
the bellows of bevan
chimed again

the welsh hwyl
elasticated the final 1k

of course
a halfway math suggested
but all one cared about

going the sub 41:28 pb
of Middlesex 10k
a few weeks
prior

feeling steady
the lumens of clock
sparkled
40:20
on approach

the tears
evaporated
but the emotions
still sang
strong
hwyl

line crossed
40:38

so chapter
verse
brothers
and
this year
past

embraced

1954

a review of
the archives
and
the month of
july 1954

elvis releases
his first single
‘that’s all right’

and indeed
it is

a silent
distant
challenge raised
lovers whispers
achieved

2015
sub 20 go
in 5k
2016

given a sequence of times
leading up
20:10
20:08
20:06
20:04
20:02

the
20:00
just, would have been

the race
the serpentine 5k championships
battersea park
the target
race

all set
fair
‘confident’, ‘no’
but on the off
i knew
mine only
not to break

that little bit extra push
to maintain
focus
concentrate upon
go

as the finish line approached
one would not have been
surprised
had the clock
displayed 20:

normally i wait a while
but this time looked down
to see
19:54

it rang well
and true
confirmed
by the official result

18 months or so back
in the run
from 27:12
that cold january
morn
to this

there has been
and is
much to reflect upon
over this time
the aches
and pains
gains
and losses

but there is joy
in this mark
made

made in battersea park

‘that’s all right’

The Ten Miler

•July 3, 2016 • 3 Comments

Harry Hawkes 2016 by SussexSportPhotography.com 09:42:16

i took a picture of self
the other eve
looked at it
and thought
yes, that’s me
that IS me

i then accidentally
deleted it
vanished
like a Thames Shag
diving asunder
fishing
without trace
gone

somewhere lurking
in ones scrapbook
a result
4th June 1985
‘Tiger’s Ten’
60:57

the last ten miler i raced
that would be until
‘Harry Hawkes 10’
26th June 2016
71:52

a seperation of
31 years 22 days
10 minutes 55 seconds

a long time not to run
but not so long
given the long time
between those
finishing times

The Tiger Ten
hosted by
the Sheffield Tigers Rugby Club
so started
at the rugby club ground
Hathersage Road

a gruel of course commenced
the first five ascending
Hathersage Road
Long Line
Sheephill Road
and then, left
upon old roman road
cutting cross moor
heading for Fox House

anyone familiar with this
trek will know
the uncertain nature
below foot
footing
an unfamiliar
ten mile run

once released from
the rock and
the hard place
back upon road
that Hathersage Road
descent

as for Harry Hawkes
upon cricket ground
within quaint Thames Ditton
well
let’s say this was a relative
breeze against Tigers gale
but Harry’s Hawke
and the thirty one years
and yes
that hamstring / adductor
on / off
which nearly meant
Harry wasn’t to be
meant, measured running
but running never-the-less

enjoyed
fulfilled
in time
of time
elapsed

so just like the vanishing images
we hold
in reflection of now
well now has come and gone
Thames, Shag and fish
Harry Hawkes a memory
banked with Tiger Ten

cometh the hour (71:52)
for the next…
